Dear Reader,

Krista Ramsey and photojournalist Carrie Cochran are bringing us a stunning story next week that I want to share with you.

Starting Sunday, the Enquirer will publish a serial story about the elderly woman who in 2008 became known as the "granny robber." Barbara Joly pleaded guilty back then, and never was asked to fully explain what happened. Joly and her family have never told her story, never talked about why -- until now.

Krista spent time over the last few months interviewing Joly in prison. She interviewed Joly's husband and only son. She talked with judges and attorneys.

Krista and I often talk about the purpose of her work -- to make the invisible visible. That's what this story accomplishes. It has left all of us who have read it and watched Carrie's videos reflective. We end up talking about what we would do if we had walked a mile in Barbara Joly's shoes. At points in the story, that seems clear. And then, suddenly, it's not. I hope it will leave you and your families with reasons to reflect and talk.

That is the reason behind the serial approach to this story. Like a book, each day is a chapter of the story. Each chapter develops characters, builds the plot and leaves you with a bit of a cliffhanger. Each day leaves us with something to reflect upon.

Special Enquirer Serial Begins Sunday

That is also the reason I hope you will watch the videos. Carrie Cochran also spent hours with the Jolys -- in prison and at home. She gathered snapshots from the family photo album and from surveillance video of the robberies. Carrie's videos work with the stories or stand alone as their own serial. But you can't fully experience this powerful story if you don't experience the videos to see and hear for yourself. I have watched them over and over and will again. I have new reactions each time.

If you haven't already activated your digital subscription at Cincinnati.com, I hope you will now. I want you to be able to take full advantage of your subscription and access these chapters and videos uninterrupted on your computer, tablet or smartphone. It's just a couple of steps, very simple.

Krista told me she has never told a story like this. And the Enquirer has not produced a serial in many years. I'm proud of the hard, thoughtful work from our team: Glenn Hartong, for video editing; Vickie Ashwill, headlines and copy editing; Jordan Kellogg, digital experience; Yvette Ogresovich, digital designer; Tom Auel, digital developer; Jeff Ruble, print designer; Randy Essex, Krista's editor; Laura Trujillo, managing editor/digital content; and Michael McCarter, director of photojournalism.

This is an important story to bring to you. Starting Sunday in the print newspaper and at Cincinnati.com. Let me know what you think at editor@enquirer.com.
